The first firearms that appeared in the late 14th century bin Europe where simply miniature cannon that were fired from horseback or from ships and fortfication. They where noisy and had a very short effective range. The invention of gunpowder was the Kickstart for this new type of weapon, and although it was only gradually introduced, the use of gunpowder would change the character of war on land and at sea forever.

Before gunpowder came on the scene, combat weapons were implements that could stab, cleave or batter an enemy to death, and so had to be used at close quarters. The only weapons  that allowed combatants to engage at range were the crossbow and longbow. In the 15th century, skilled English and welsh archers armed with longbows could deliver plunging fire at target such as massed horsemen at about 180m/200yd . This type of fire was similar to that delivered by a machine gun firing  at long range. As the range shortened with the mass of the shaft or stele behind it would take on the characteristics of a modern anti-tank shell with its long rod penetrator

इससे पहले कि बंदूकधारी बार-बार घटनास्थल पर आते, लड़ाकू हथियार ऐसे उपकरण थे, जो किसी दुश्मन को चाकू मार सकते थे, मार सकते थे या मौत के घाट उतार सकते थे।  एकमात्र हथियार जिसने रेंजरों को संलग्न करने की अनुमति दी, क्रॉसबो और लॉन्गबो थे।  15 वीं शताब्दी में, longbows से लैस कुशल अंग्रेजी और वस्त्र तीरंदाज़ी लगभग 180 मीटर / 200yd पर बड़े पैमाने पर घुड़सवार जैसे लक्ष्य पर आग लगा सकते थे।  इस प्रकार की आग लंबी दूरी पर मशीन गन फायरिंग द्वारा वितरित की गई थी।  जैसे कि शॉफ्ट के द्रव्यमान के साथ छोटा किया गया भाग या पीछे की ओर एक आधुनिक एंटी-टैंक शेल की विशेषताओं के साथ इसकी लंबी रॉड छेदक होगी
